St John's School
Menu

The parish of Saint John the Evangelist is fortunate to have its own Church of England Nursery and Infants School, which is of voluntary aided status. The school and church maintain close links, with our priests visiting the school to take assemblies, assist in classes, as well as in musical and non-academic activities. The school comes to church at least once a term for a special service, that is usually prepared by the children themselves.

Mission Statement

Saint John the Evangelist School aims to serve its community by providing an education of the highest quality within the context of Christian belief and practice. The school will promote Christian values through the experience it offers to all its pupils.

Aims of the School

The school aims to create an atmosphere that is caring and supportive, where children are encouraged to develop their potential and are valued as individuals. We believe that the growth of early skills, knowledge and techniques flourish best in such an environment.

Opportunities to observe, explore and investigate the world lead to increasing independence. The provision of a broad-based curriculum, in line with national guidelines, aims to challenge and motivate children in a positive way, which will stimulate interest and develop learning skills. It is important that all children have equal access to its curriculum regardless of gender or culture.

In the main school, children are taught as a whole class, in groups and individually. Children will be stimulated, encouraged and taught so that progress is at a pace and level that is right for them. It is the governors' policy to keep class sizes as small as possible.

Children leave St John's in July of the academic year during which they have their seventh birthday. St Nicolas Junior School takes up to 60 children form St John's each year although there is no automatic right of transfer. Children usually visit their prospective junior school before they transfer, so that they can become familiar with their new situation. School records are also tranferred.

Infant children in Key stage 1 spend two years at St John the Evangelist School and follow the National Curriculum. Documents relating to the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum are available for parents in school. All members of the teaching staff are involved in decisions about the curriculum and each teacher takes on responsibility for a curriculum area. Children work through schemes of work that have been specially developed by teachers and are encouraged to reach the highest standard that they can.

Arrangements for visits for prospective parents

Please telephone the school to make an appointement to come and meet us and have a look round the school. We usually try to arrange this visit in small groups so that we do not disturb the children. This is an opportunity to meet other prospective parents and to ask any questions that you might have concerning your child's early years in school.
